Meghan Markle slammed for ‘monetizing the monarchy’ after launching ShopMy account to earn commission


Meghan Markle is being slammed after she created a ShopMy account that allows her to earn commission on affiliate links she posts, including the clothes she wore on her Netflix show – and many are not impressed.

On Monday, Meghan took to her Instagram stories to announce that she would now be linking items on the platform, writing a message to her followers.

‘Many of you have asked, so here you go!’ Meghan wrote in text on top of the story. ‘A little shopping to start the week. More to come. Link in bio.’

The wardrobe comprised mostly of elevated basics, including linen shirts, crewneck sweaters, sunglasses, and handbags, in neutral shades like beige, brown, white, black, and navy blue. 

Among the items she has linked is a $1,415 beige cashmere crewneck from designer Loro Piana, an ivory silk maxi dress by Heidi Merrick listed $1,350, and a pair of loose brown pants for $388 from Brochu Walker.

She has labeled the store under the name ‘Meghan, Duchess of Sussex’ – just weeks after she was seen correcting comedian Mindy Kaling on her proper last name of ‘Sussex.’

However, many are already taking a stand against the new venture, as many users took to X, formerly Twitter, to air their grievances.

‘Do people need another celebrity selling them things they don’t need at this moment in our country’s financial status? I wish her well!’ one person typed.

Another agreed, ‘I have enough cream clothing, but thanks! Plus, I like clothes that aren’t wrinkled and that fit properly.’

‘Meghan joining ShopMy is shocking. I thought she would at least wait until after As Ever launched before we started seeing affiliate links. My guess is she saw that others were making $ from items on the show and wanted a cut, but she has truly reached full influencer status,’ one account suggested.

One X user commented, ‘I can’t believe she is allowed to get away with monetizing the monarchy.’

‘And here we go-affiliate links. She’s making money off affiliate links,’ another wrote. ‘That’s literally the most low budget influencer crap, and a Duchess of the British Royal Family is shilling links to make commission.’

Others X users, however, seemed to think it was a smart marketing move for Meghan.

‘Meghan Sussex is now providing outfit details! This is SO smart since now she can use her large social media reach to strike deals with these brands. I make a solid amount from clothing affiliate links so I can only imagine what her almost three million followers will allow her to make,’ one person wrote.

Another seconded, ‘FINALLY! I’ve been hoping Meghan Sussex would do this.’

Markle made the announcement via Instagram just a few days after the show premiered, as she shared a video of some different snippets from various episodes.

‘If you’re loving Season 1, just wait until you see the fun we cooked up on Season 2!’ the mom-of-two wrote in the caption.

‘Thanks for joining the party, and an endless thanks to the amazing team and crew who helped bring it all to life!’ her message continued, as she tagged the Netflix Instagram account.

At the same time as her Netflix premiere, Markle also revealed some of the products that she will be selling in conjunction wit her new lifestyle brand, As Ever.

Not only does it include pancake mix, but also raspberry spread in ‘keepsake packaging’ and a limited-edition wildflower honey. The items are not yet for sale.
