Duchess of Sussex

Meghan Markle may get to promote her new series from the Oscars red carpet

Her lifestyle and cookery show, With Love, Meghan, which airs on Netflix from Tuesday, has been plagued by problems.

Its launch was delayed by the LA wildfires, and she has faced claims she copied former Baywatch star Pamela Anderson’s show, Pamela’s Cooking with Love.

A source said: ‘She [Meghan]would make waves if she shows up tonight and will get global publicity for her series.’

Tonight’s Oscars ceremony is also mired in controversy. The film Emilia Perez – about a sex change Mexican cartel boss – leads the field with 13 nominations and had been expected to sweep the board until its transgender star Karla Sofia Gascon was found to have posted racist comments on social media.

Gascon is also in the running personally for Best Actress – a historic first as no other trans woman has ever received a nomination.

A source inside the Academy of Motion Pictures, which runs the Oscars, said she ‘had been favourite to win Best Actress until she torpedoed her chances’.

Demi Moore, who starred in The Substance, is now favourite to win.

Anora, a film about a stripper who marries a Russian oligarch’s son, is favourite to land Best Picture, although Conclave, about the process to pick a new pope, is in the running.

Sir Elton John and Brandi Carlile are set to perform their Oscar-nominated song Never Too Late. It was written for the documentary Elton John: Never Too Late and is favourite for Best Original Song.

Producers have warned ‘woke’ stars not to use the Oscar stage tonight as a political pulpit.

Host Conan O’Brien will introduce a segment paying tribute to victims of the LA wildfires and the In Memoriam segment will include a tribute to film legend Gene Hackman, whose death was revealed last week.

A ‘ring of steel’ will be thrown around the venue, Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre, amid fears of anti-Donald Trump demos outside.
