King Charles ‘listened to none of the advice’ he received about limiting his time and ‘shaking less hands’ at the first garden party of the year – and was ‘glad-handing as many people as he could’ – Rebecca English tells PALACE CONFIDENTIAL

The King seemingly ‘listened to none’ of the advice he received about limiting his time and ‘shaking less hands’ at the first Garden Party of the year, a royal expert has revealed.

Charles, 75, who had taken a break from public duties amid his treatment for cancer, appeared in very good spirits as he spoke to guests earlier this month – and was ‘so enthusiastic’ to be back in action.

Rebecca English, Royal Editor at the Daily Mail, told this week’s Palace Confidential that the monarch was ‘glad-handing as many people as he could’.

‘He was clearly a man that’s undergoing treatment,’ she explained. ‘He doesn’t look as well as he did, say, 18 months ago.

‘But he was in just such a jolly mood. I was warned in advance that they might try to tweak it a little bit, he might do 45 minutes… with the public or shake less hands.

‘But of course he listened to none of that and wanted to meet and greet as many people as possible.’

And it appears Charles isn’t looking to pump the breaks. The Queen revealed on Thursday that the King is ‘getting better’ before joking: ‘Well, he would be if he behaved himself.’

Camilla, 76, was chatting to guests at a garden party at Lamb House in Rye, East Sussex, where she was treated to a performance by actors Timothy West and Hayley Mills.

Charles is said to be delighted that his doctors have given him permission to undertake more public engagements again.

He packed in five major events in 48 hours earlier this week alone – and his wife revealed that he was ‘quite cross he could not be there’, but had been ‘dragged away to more menial tasks’.

She was visiting Lamb House, home of the author EF Benson, on a literary-themed day of engagements in Sussex.

The King had been undertaking state business and royal duties tirelessly behind the scenes since his diagnosis, and has now been given the green light to attend more events in public.

He is also set to lead the Royal Family at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show next week.

Earlier this month Charles looked in his element at Camilla‘s side as the royal couple hosted a garden party at Buckingham Palace in London on May 8.

Aides are keen that the monarch is protected as much as possible from anything that could lead to infection – but the gathering was allowed to go ahead due to being outdoors.

Charles joined other senior royals for the first royal party of the summer season, including the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, the Princess Royal and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.

At the same time just two miles away in St Paul’s Cathedral, Charles’s son Prince Harry attended a service of thanksgiving to celebrate the 10th anniversary of his Invictus Games.

A spokesperson for the Duke Of Sussex previously confirmed the monarch’s ‘full programme’ meant a get-together between Harry and his cancer-stricken father would not be happening.

And speaking to this week’s Palace Confidential, Richard Kay claimed that ‘Camilla – the Queen – the King’s close staff, do not want him getting frazzled because of a conversation which goes wrong with Harry’.

‘Did Harry want to see his father? I’m sure he did,’ the Daily Mail’s Editor-at-Large remarked.

‘Did Charles want to see his son? I’m sure he did. But it was convenient that he had a very busy week and he didn’t have the time.’

‘I think what a lot of people what a lot of our viewers and our readers have puzzled over is how could a father not find five or ten minutes – even a man as busy as the King – to sit down and say hello to his son who’s flown 6000 miles,’ Richard added.

‘But that is often the royal way and I think what people are neglecting to remember in all this is that the King is still having cancer treatment.

‘He does still get tired and meetings with his son are fraught. And there is no doubt they have remained that way for some time.’
