Meghan Markle made a dramatic return to Instagram today after posting her first clip to her new account, simply titled @meghan.

In the clip that was filmed by Prince Harry, the Duchess of Sussex, 43 can be seen walking towards a shoreline at the beach near Montecito.

Then, she proceeds to draw the digits of the New Year – 2025 – into the sand, perhaps hinting an upcoming project.

Experts previously predicted Meghan could rake in $1million (£790,000) per post as ‘an absolute minimum’. They also anticipate that her account launch could see her become one of the top ten highest-paid influencers in the world. 

The return to Instagram comes after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex vowed never to return to social media after claiming to have dealt with an ‘almost unsurvivable’ amount of abuse.

Her old Instagram page titled meghanmarkle, which boasted three million followers, featured posts that were often personal and even political.

So what can royal fans expect from the mother-of-two now she has made her return to social media?

Here, FEMAIL takes a look at what Meghan posted on social media before marrying into the British royal family – to get an idea of what she may post now she and Harry have moved on and settled down in California.

When it was first rumoured that Meghan was dating Prince Harry, the Suits actress posted an adorable picture of two bananas with animated faces.

Underneath the picture of the anthropomorphic fruit cuddling each other, Meghan wrote: ‘Sleep tight xx’.

At the time, many interpreted this post as a nod to the couple and their long distance relationship.

The actress inadvertently dropped another hint about her rumoured relationship with the Prince by posting a photo in which she is wearing a blue and white bracelet – almost identical to one sported by the royal back in 2016.

The bracelet appeared in several of the star’s Instagram posts, including a snap of a gorgeous bouquet of pink flowers.

Perhaps Meghan will offer her followers more insights into her relationship with Prince Harry on her new Instagram page.

Before becoming the Duchess of Sussex, she played the part of Rachel Zane on the critically acclaimed show between 2011 and 2018.

As a major advocate for mental health, family care and gender equity, it is no surprise that Meghan has attended protests before.

In one of her previous posts, Meghan snaps a picture of a protester after the Brexit vote.

It is not good practice for a member of the royal family to share their political beliefs – but as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are no longer working royals, Meghan may take the opportunity to share her opinions with her followers again.

The children’s mother is Meghan’s friend Benita Litt.

Now that Meghan has two children of her own, fans will be hoping for an insight into their life in Montecito on her new Instagram account.

Treating her former account almost as if it were a scrapbook of her life, Meghan also posted poetry.

One poem – by American poet Tyler Knott Gregson, who is famous for writing Japanese haikus – reads: ‘You rolled over from under, you rest atop me.

‘”You are the only person on Earth that can turn me on by simply breathing,” I mumbled into the top of your hair.’

The verse was shared to Meghan’s page in 2014 – two years before she reportedly met Prince Harry.

Known for her feminist beliefs, Meghan also shared several mottos with her followers.

One posted to her previous account reads: ‘Teach your daughters to worry less about fitting into glass slippers and more about shattering glass ceilings’.

Another empowering message emblazoned on a woman’s shirt reads: ‘Strong women intimidate boys… and excite men’. 

In 2023, Meghan revealed how she was eager to make a comeback to social media, telling The Cut: ‘Do you want to know a secret? I’m getting back…on Instagram.’ 

She had been teasing her return for months, with news that the @meghan handle was hers creating a frenzy of followers despite the account lying empty without a single post.

The account was first created in June 2022. It had no bio information and only had a profile picture of pink dahlias.

It is unclear how Meghan was able to get hold of her unique username as Instagram’s guidelines state handles are given on a ‘first-come, first-served basis’.

A single-name handle such as @meghan is rare, with most users needing to include surnames and numbers to find handles that haven’t already been taken.

It is also unknown whether the handle was held by a previous user, but celebrities are able to buy an Instagram name.

In 2019 the royal couple caused controversy when they started their @sussexroyal Instagram account.

Football fan Kevin Keiley, from West Sussex, had used the handle for around three years, creating it because he was a Reading FC fan – nicknamed The Royals – and was from Sussex.

But he said it was ‘stolen’ from him and given Instagram said his handle was given away because the account lay inactive, but Mr Keiley said no one contacted him about it.

Akshay Makadiya, founder of digital marketing agency RankLane, said: ‘Celebrities often have an easier time obtaining specific usernames on platforms like Instagram. Given her global fame, there are several methods Meghan could have potentially obtained the handle through.

‘The handle might have been in use by another individual with the same name or for other purposes. Meghan’s team could have reached out to the original user and negotiated a transfer.

‘This could involve a financial transaction. Or if the account was inactive or perceived as ‘squatting’ (holding on to a username without genuine use, especially with intentions to profit from it later), Instagram’s policies could have facilitated its release to Meghan.’

Social media expert Eric Schiffer previously told the Mail On Sunday: ‘I don’t think Meghan coming back to Instagram will surprise anyone. She has a new talent manager and this is the next logical step. 

‘You have celebrities like the Kardashians who can command $1million and up for a single post promoting a product. There is no reason Meghan couldn’t be earning those sorts of fees.’
