How Meghan Markle’s style has changed from boho island girl to Hollywood glam since her first wedding in Jamaica 13 years ago

Last night Meghan Markle was the image of Hollywood glamour with a slicked-back bun and what fashion experts believe to be a bespoke, flowing maxi skirt from Carolina Herrera – as she and her husband attended the premiere of the new Bob Marley film in Kingston, Jamaica.

But when the Duchess of Sussex, has in past jetted off to the island – for her own wedding to first husband Trevor Engleson in 2011 and to a friends’ nuptials in 2017 – her ensembles appeared significantly less A-lister polished.

She paid a visit to the Caribbean nation thirteen years ago, showing off an even more laid-back style when she had her first ever wedding there.

The Duchess – who has in past described herself as a ‘Californian hippie’ – donned a casual white sleeveless frock, adorned with minimal glittering detail at the waist, as she and her former husband had a beach barbecue at their reception.

The pair tied the knot at the Jamaica Inn in Ocho Rios before their split in 2013, and Meghan could also be seen wearing a yellow bikini and baseball cap as she enjoyed some drinking games with pals ahead of the ceremony.

Meanwhile in 2017, Meghan visited once again when Prince Harry‘s pals Tom Inskip and Lara Hughes-Young tied the knot.

Then, the mother-of-two channelled a boho-chic vibe with a simple flowery dress – featuring a flowy silhouette and a halter neck – along with some sunglasses.

Instead of pinning her hair up, the former actress kept her brunette tresses relaxed and wavy.

It’s also a marked contrast from Meghan’s previous island looks, such as her soft floral ensembles during a 2018 trip across Australia, Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand.

The Duchess of Sussex oozed glamour in a monochrome ensemble, which she looked to team with a simple body suit, on Tuesday evening.

The strappy design showed off her toned shoulders and cinched at the waist, as the mother-of-two grinned for the cameras during Paramount’s glitzy screening of the biopic at the Carib Theatre.

Meghan teamed her sophisticated look with flashy accessories, and is thought by royal watchers, including Royal Fashion Police on Instagram, to have sported 18K Gold earrings from Jennifer Meyer Jewellery, costing $3,250 (around £2,558.37).

Elsewhere, the Duchess held onto her classic ‘J Box clutch’ from Jimmy Choo (worth £750, or around $952.75) – one of her staple items, which she has worn multiple times over the years.

She showed off her dewy skin with simple, understated make-up and styled her hair in a slicked-back bun.

Meanwhile Prince Harry, 39, opted for a casual black suit and white shirt for the event.

Accustomed to wearing designer clothing and exquisite jewels, the Duchess of Sussex is widely recognised for her luxurious style.

And in 2023, this was no exception as Meghan showcased a wardrobe worth £86,612.16. It is £4,121.48 more than her 2022 total, which was £79,000.

Meanwhile, in 2021, she showcased outfits worth £58,388, and in 2020, the year she stepped back from her role as a senior royal, her closet totalled £44,188. However, in 2018 her clothing bill totalled almost half a million pounds (£406,662.55).

While a working member of the Royal Family , the cost of Meghan’s clothes for work engagements was covered by then-Prince Charles through the budget he gave the couple from the Duchy of Cornwall.

However, since the couple became financially independent, it is not clear who is picking up the bill for Meghan’s clothes, whether she pays full price or receives discounts from designers.

On International Women’s Day in March, she showcased her most expensive outfit, featuring a £2,996 Max Mara Lilia coat, paired with a Chanel 19 Flap bag, costing £4,759.54.

Meghan and Harry – who stepped down from royal duties four years ago – also stood with prime minister of Jamaica Andrew Holness and his wife Juliet at the premiere.

Holness has said his country is ‘moving on’ from the British monarchy. Harry’s father, King Charles, is currently head of state of Jamaica.

The process to sever ties with the British monarchy is underway, following in the footsteps of another former Caribbean possession, Barbados.

Much like the island county’s severance with the monarchy, Prince Harry too revoked his HRH titles and sensationally moved on from being a working royal in early 2020.

He moved to North America with his wife Meghan, who he wed in 2018.

Meghan and Harry now reside in Montecito, California, with their two children, Archie and Lilibet. The Sussexes have made very few public and personal trips back to the UK since leaving their duties behind.

The couple have had many ventures in the entertainment industry since their royal departure. They signed multimillion-dollar deals with Netflix and Spotify to produce podcasts and docuseries, discussing their life within the royal fold.

Six months ago, they parted ways with their $20million Spotify deal, following the production of Meghan’s ‘Archetypes’ podcast series.

On Tuesday night, Prince Harry was seen on the red carpet hugging Ziggy Marley, the 55-year-old musician and son of Bob and Rita Marley, who produced One Love.

It is unclear why Harry and Meghan were there – although the film showcases British talent, with Londoners Kingsley Ben-Adir as Bob Marley and Lashana Lynch as Rita Marley, and James Norton playing producer Chris Blackwell.

And in 2012, Harry also travelled to the island nation for his Diamond Jubilee tour of the Caribbean, where he was seen dancing with a large crowd to Marley’s hit One Love.

He also met the late musician’s widow, Rita Marley, now 77.

Bob Marley died of cancer in 1981, aged 36.

And as they were soaking up the sun, Harry’s father King Charles was readying for his operation, and Kate Middleton was recovering.

The King, 75, was seen on Monday driving near Sandringham in his electric Audi

Charles, who clasped the wheel with thick green woollen gloves, was sighted briefly before making his way back through the main entrance of his Norfolk estate, where he was saluted by a policeman.

Queen Camilla described the King as doing ‘fine’ as she chatted to a member of the public during a visit to Deacon and Sons, a 175-year-old family run jewellery shop in Swindon.

Local woman Jessie Jackson, 86, said she shook the Queen’s hand and asked her how Charles was doing.

Nicky Jackson, 48, who accompanied her, added: ‘She asked how Charles was. He’s fine. We forgot about poor Kate.’

Charles flew back to Sandringham from Scotland on Friday to prepare for his upcoming operation.

The monarch and his wife were flown more than 300 miles on a Royal Air Force jet from Aberdeen Airport to RAF Marham before being driven the final 15 miles.

He was pictured sitting in the back seat of his Audi EV while being driven by a chauffeur.

It comes at a difficult time for the Royal Family, with the Princess of Wales recovering in hospital from scheduled abdominal surgery and the Duchess of York revealing at the weekend that she has skin cancer.

The Princess of Wales is said to be ‘doing well’ after going under the knife for her abdominal operation at The London Clinic near Regent’s Park last week

She will remain in the exclusive clinic for up to 14 days, and is not expected to return to official duties until after Easter.

Meanwhile, Sarah, 64, was diagnosed with malignant melanoma – an aggressive form of skin cancer – after several moles were removed during reconstructive surgery following her mastectomy in June.

One was identified as cancerous and she is now undergoing further medical checks to make sure the cancer has been caught in the early stages.
