Worst celeb photoshop fails amid Kate’s infamous Mother’s Day picture
The royals have come under scrutiny after the Princess of Wales said she had edited the infamous Mother’s Day family picture taken by Prince William and shared on their social media. Due to the image being deemed as ‘edited’, it was then ‘killed’ by multiple picture agencies. While many were surprised to see the royals manipulate the image, it is common practice among celebrities to made adjustments to their images with a little digital wizardry. Among those most infamous for shaving an inch (or several) off various parts of their body, or smoothing out lines and blemishes, are household names like Kim Kardashian. And Modern Family actor Sofia Vergara is another star who has been accused of retouching images. Even model Kendall Jenner is not immune from accusations of manipulating her physique in photos. Here, FEMAIL looks at some of the photos accused of digital manipulation…
The brunette bombshell is no stranger to baring it all on Instagram, and often shares snaps online. However, this playful denim snap sent eagle-eyed fans into a frenzy for a reason that may not be immediately obvious. This is because the Griselda star was seen to have a ‘bendy fireplace’ while sporting a pair of the Sofia Vergara jeans, sold at Walmart. The picture, posted to the photo-sharing app in October last year saw the Colombian-American actress flaunt her derriere as she modelled her line of jeans at the affordable retailer.
It didn’t take long for Vergara’s 34 million Instagram followers to notice that her bathroom fireplace appeared to be bending. This was considered by some to be the result of a Photoshop blunder – although others ran to the star’s defence. One said of her ‘bending fireplace’ that: ‘I don’t give a [Expletive] if the picture is photoshopped or not. 1. She’s still one of the most beautiful women in the world, and 2. Her jeans are comfortable as hell! I have several pairs and I love them’. However, another replied: ‘The point isn’t that she isn’t beautiful, it’s the damage she is doing by photoshopping to give other females a false sense of what’s real and what’s attainable’.
Often considered the most relatable Kardashian sister, Khloe startled the internet a few years ago, when she posted a glamorous snap to Instagram looking barely recognisable. In 2020, the Kardashian was called out over the image, as the candid original look appeared to emerge in a scene from Keeping Up with the Kardashians, suggesting the reality star had overdosed on filters. And the reality star came under fire again for similar reasons; ‘the arm’ on a sweet birthday tribute to her mother Kris Jenner, in November 2023, which appeared to have a missing dent. However, Khloe was quick to clap back, while admitting she was an avid Photoshopper: ‘I saw this ridiculous story of my Photoshopping my forearm lol why would I do that? Ha I love some photoshop but my forearm is good ha’.
And other fans were was more fixated on the manipulation of other features, writing on Instagram: ‘Who cares about the arm?? Why are we not talking about her forehead in the 1st 2 pics??’ In 2022, Khloe denied posting a badly Photoshopped picture of herself, attempting to shift blame on her glam team. In the photo, the reality star is seen posing in a skintight black catsuit . Her already trim waist appeared even slimmer as many fans questioned if it was even humanly possible. Her arm was also extremely thin, with her shoulder cut off. In the snap, the wall to the left of her also curved and the gold framed mirror had a wave. Many fans were quick to slam the star but she insisted the photo had not been posted by a member or her or her team. She denied that she was the person who posted a badly Photoshopped image of herself.
Paula Abdul was ridiculed on social media in December 2022 after she posted photos to Instagram showing her with an apparently filtered face that made her look decades younger than her real age. The 62-year-old dancer and singer could have passed for a teenager in the photo showing her posing with Kathy Hilton at the star-studded Christmas party. Paula, who looked lovely in a sheer green dress with a starburst pattern of beads over her chest, had eerily smooth and unblemished skin in the photo.
A short clip included in the post showed Paula chatting animatedly with Kathy, and the video didn’t appear to have the same smoothing effect, catching the stunner out. ‘Someone stole Paula’s Insta..that’s an entirely different face!’ wrote one user. ‘This looks like a completely different person,’ echoed another.
Johnny Depp swiftly celebrated Robert Downey Jr.’s Oscars win on social media but had to retract an image that was later revealed to be photoshopped. The Pirates of the Caribbean star, 60, took to his Instagram Stories on Sunday to extend congratulations to his longtime friend, celebrating his victory as Best Supporting Actor for his remarkable performance in Oppenheimer. However, the initial post featured a digitally altered image of the two stars, prompting fans to label it as a Photoshop fail.
The snap used by Depp turned out to be a manipulated version of a 1988 picture featuring Downey with his then-girlfriend, Sarah Jessica Parker, with Depp absent altogether from the original photo. Depp promptly substituted the image with an authentic photograph of him and Downey at the Golden Globes in 2011, adding the caption: ‘Let’s try this again…congrats to my dear friend.’
A Christmas card released by the Spanish Royal Family has resurfaced online and left fans in hysterics thanks its poor Photoshopping. The image, which was taken in 2005, has re-emerged after the Princess of Wales admitted to editing her Mother’s Day post. In the family portrait, King Juan Carlos – who abdicated in June 2014 – is seen sitting on a red sofa next to his wife Queen Sofia, who is holding their baby granddaughter Princess Leonor. In front of the sofa, the royal couple’s other grandchildren – Felipe, Victoria Eugenia, Miguel, Juan, Irene and Pablo – are seen sitting on green velvet cushion. However, royal watchers at the time noticed that King Juan Carlos’ leg had been edited out the photo. This prompted a Palace spokesperson to admit that photo editing software had been used to create the image. After struggling to get all the grandchildren together in a room, the Palace superimposed photos of the royals onto the same background for the sake of the Christmas card. A spokesperson said: ‘It is not a photograph of an official event – it is merely a compilation used as a Christmas greeting.’
In mid-December 2023, Prince William, 41, and Kate, 42, released a casual family picture with their three young children in matching white shirts which were on the front of their festive card for that year. The monochrome image shows the royal couple smiling alongside their sons Prince George, 10, Prince Louis, five, and Princess Charlotte, eight, who is seated in a chair at the front of the group, with Louis’ hand resting on the arm.
But in a suspected editing fail , some believe Louis seems to be missing the middle finger on his left hand. Now, social media users have noticed the error, some have suggested more inconsistencies. This came just months before Princess Kate’s most recent brush with photoshop allegations.
