Meghan Markle has been ridiculed by royal fans over her latest faux pas fashion choice, with some comparing her dramatic designer gown to a “toga costume”. The Duchess of Sussex, 45, joined Prince Harry at the David Foster Foundation’s 40th Anniversary Celebration in Victoria, British Columbia, on Friday evening.
While Meghan opted for a glamorous one-shouldered black gown for the occasion, her unusual draped design quickly divided opinion online sparking a major frenzy. The couple stepped out for the star-studded event on August 7, with Meghan choosing a £1,300-plus gown by Canadian fashion label Greta Constantine.
However, it wasn’t long before social media users began picking apart the blunder, with the dramatic swathe of fabric falling from Meghan’s shoulder proving particularly divisive.
Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one critic wrote: “Her dress looks like a toga costume.” Another was similarly unimpressed, writing: “I didn’t realise how tacky that dress looked till I saw this, oh my gosh video.
A third questioned the gown’s dramatic draping, joking: “Why is she holding that scrap of fabric like it’s a water hose?”
Meanwhile, another royal watcher believed the outfit bore similarities to the green ensmble the Princess of Wales wore to Wimbeldon last month.
They wrote: “My first thought was that it was a very badly executed riff on the beautiful green dress worn by the Princess of Wales on the final day of Wimbledon.”
However, not everyone shared the criticism, with plenty of fans rushing to Meghan’s defence and praising the dramatic evening look. One wrote: “I think her dress would look better on someone that was taller. But agree I’ve seen her wear worse.” Another was much more enthusiastic, declaring: “I love the dress, it’s gorgeous.” A second fan agreed, adding: “So stunning, I love the dress.”
Meghan wore Greta Constantine’s Fabrizio One-Shoulder Cape Gown, which retails for £1,329.46 [$1,795]. The floor-length black design featured an asymmetric neckline that left one shoulder completely bare, while the opposite side extended into a dramatic cape-like panel of fabric.
The fitted silhouette skimmed Meghan’s figure before falling into a long, flowing skirt, with the statement draping trailing almost to the floor. Rather than overwhelming the look with accessories, Meghan kept everything else relatively pared back.
She swept her brunette hair away from her face into a sleek updo, allowing the asymmetric neckline to take centre stage, and opted for glowing make-up with defined eyes and a neutral lip.
For jewellery, the Duchess dipped into one of the most sentimental pieces in her collection, wearing Princess Diana’s pavé diamond butterfly stud earrings.
She also added another familiar piece from her jewellery box, Cartier’s iconic yellow-gold Love bracelet, which provided a subtle flash of gold against the all-black ensemble.
Prince Harry, 41, coordinated with his wife in classic black tie, wearing a black tuxedo with a crisp white shirt, black bow tie and polished black shoes.
The couple posed together on the purple carpet before attending the anniversary celebration, which marked four decades of the Canadian charity’s work.
