Meghan Markle makes brief cameos in Prince’s Harry’s Netflix series

Meghan Markle briefly appears in Prince Harry’s new Netflix series, “The Heart of Invictus,” where she supports him. The Duke of Sussex, 38, released the Invictus Games documentary on Netflix as part of their $80 million deal. Meghan, 42, has limited appearances, including giving a speech and offering support to Harry. 

The release comes as the couple prepares for their first joint appearance together since they attended the Women in Vision Awards in New York back in May. The Duchess only appears on camera in four of the episodes of the five-part docu-series. In her most prominent moment, Meghan is shown speaking at the opening ceremony of the Games to introduce Harry to the stage, in footage which was aired live at the time. 

Harry went on to thank his wife for the introduction, saying, “Thank you, my love.” Elsewhere, in the first episode of the series, Meghan can be seen joining Harry at the November 2021 Salute to Freedom Gala in New York. The couple arrives at the event, and the Duke confides in the Duchess about his nervousness for an upcoming speech. He tells her, “We haven’t done this for a while,” to which Meghan responds, “I know.” Harry continues, “My heart is like digidigadigadiga 

In a later episode, the couple discusses the Invictus Games in The Hague, describing the day’s events as ‘tense’ and ‘tough’ and expressing their excitement about meeting the Ukrainian team. Backstage at the games, they join a group therapy session before attending the opening ceremony, where Meghan praises the crowd as ‘incredible.’ In another episode, Harry prepares his speech for The Hague while holding scruffy-looking notes, joking that this is ‘how not to give a speech.’ Meghan stands by his side in a white suit, smiling, as their advisor, James Holt, reviews the Duke’s notes. 

In a lighthearted moment, James jokes about Harry’s handwriting. Harry struggles with the pronunciation of General Onno Eichelsheim’s name in his speech, prompting Meghan and James to help. Meghan records the correct pronunciation on her phone, repeats it aloud, and plays it back several times to assist Harry. During Harry’s speech, he confidently pronounces General Eichelsheim’s name correctly, making Meghan proud and causing laughter from the audience. 

In one episode, Meghan doesn’t appear at all, despite the Invictus Games being a significant moment in their relationship. The Invictus Games marked their first public appearance nearly five years ago. Meghan made her debut at an official engagement with Harry on September 24, 2017, during the opening ceremony in Toronto, Canada. Until this year, the couple was known for their unity, even during the controversial Oprah Winfrey interview in March 2021. However, during the release of Harry’s memoir, “Spare,” which criticized his family and detailed his combat experiences, Meghan was notably absent from promotions and interviews. 

Meghan reportedly stayed away to avoid accusations of ‘stealing the limelight.’ She may have had mild concerns about the book’s approach but supported Harry’s personal project. The book’s release coincided with a drop in Harry’s popularity due to its fallout, both in the US and the UK. Meghan was ‘cautious’ about the memoir, possibly raising ‘gentle concerns.’ The ‘truth bombs’ in the book could impact Meghan’s political ambitions. This comes during a challenging period, with experts noting that Prince Harry has ‘lost some star power’ and has become a ‘magnet for negative PR.’ 

Pressure mounts for the Invictus documentary to succeed after the Sussexes’ Spotify deal ended in June after one season of Meghan’s podcast, Archetypes. Netflix released the series trailer on August 16. Despite rumors of Netflix facing a similar fate, the platform expressed support for the couple, stating on June 27 that their partnership with Archewell Productions continues. On August 24, it was confirmed that Meghan will join Harry at the Invictus Games next month, though she may miss the opening ceremony. Harry will travel to the UK for a charity awards ceremony on September 7, celebrating the achievements of seriously ill youngsters and their families supported by WellChild, on the eve of the late Queen’s first anniversary.
