Prince Archie & Princess Lilibet

AMANDA PLATELL: Prince Harry’s apparently desperate to reconnect with Charles. Well I’ve a suggestion… but he may not like it

Many were staggered when the intensely private Prince Harry shared pictures of himself with his children Archie and Lilibet at home with their faces uncovered for the first time.

Yes they were taken when the kids were infants, but it was surprising nonetheless.

Of course they led to plenty of speculation as to the real reason media-hating Harry released the intimate snaps. And in the Daily Mail’s new showbiz newsletter Spotlight, an insider claimed that, rather than being an attempt to promote Meghan’s latest commercial venture or boost clicks following her return to Instagram, there was a more poignant motive behind their publication.

The insider claimed they were a cry for recognition from his father, King Charles, an attempt to reconnect with the Pa who, apart from seeing Archie as a newborn, has never met his Sussex grandchildren.

‘Harry is desperate, completely heartbroken,’ the insider claimed. ‘His dad refuses to see him or the kids – not even on Zoom… it’s a last resort.

‘He’s desperately hoping the King might see pictures of Archie and Lilibet and realise what he’s missing.’

Well, I’ve a suggestion for the Prince and how he might reconnect with his dad. If he’s so desperate for Pa to see his grandchildren, he could manage it easily. He could get on a plane and bring them here. But only after he has apologised for all the cruelty he has inflicted on the Royal Family – not just on his father but his stepmother Queen Camilla, his brother and the Princess of Wales.

Then he would surely get the welcome from the King that he wants – provided he doesn’t have one of Meghan’s Netflix crews in tow.

If the insider account is true – that he’s putting these snaps of his kids online in the hope the King will make contact – he’s playing a mug’s game. True, the pictures might melt his father’s heart. But what does he expect to happen next?

That the King of England, who is working day and night supporting the Crown and his charities while undergoing cancer treatment, should drop everything and get on a plane to visit the Sussexes in California?

Harry, after all, has made clear ad nauseam that he does not feel safe bringing his family to the UK after being denied the automatic security offered to all working royals, now that he is no longer one. He even fought for it to be reinstated in the Court of Appeal, where he lost his case last month.

So the impasse is going to continue. If it’s heartbreaking for Harry that his Dad allegedly refuses to see him or the kids, it’s too bad – he only has himself to blame. Harry’s pleadings in court that ‘the UK is my home… central to the heritage of my children’ the country he loves, ring hollow given he abandoned it in 2020 for California.

Personally, I’d be happy if neither Prince Harry nor Meghan set foot in Britain ever again.

But I do feel sorry for the King and would like to see him reconciled with his family. So, Harry, it’s down to you. Make a public apology, not just to the royals but to the British people too. Get over your hissy fit about security. Stop betraying your father, our King, by telling spiteful tales about your family. Then, only then, might we welcome you back to Britain.
