Being in the limelight is part and parcel of being a member of the British Royal Family, as is being a celebrity. This is a fact that has seemed apparent in recent years – and especially this year with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations taking place.
Though this is a spotlight that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Harry and Meghan, seem to have tried – and unfortunately for them, unsuccessfully – to shake off. And in doing so the couple has become the topic of perhaps even more discussion and divided opinions.
In 2020, the couple announced they would step back as ‘senior working’ royals and become ‘financially independent’. This was a move the Duke and Duchess followed through with when they undertook their last senior royal duties in March 2020. In February 2021, it was confirmed Harry and Meghan would not be returning as working members of The Royal Family.
It was later revealed in a tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey that this split was spurred on by a “lack of support and lack of understanding” from both the media and the royal family. It was in the same 2021 interview that Meghan revealed how the pressures had affected her mental health, while Harry thought back to his mother Princess Diana and the pressure she was put under.
