Duchess Meghan and Anita Hill are lauding Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson for becoming the first Black woman to be nominated to the United States Supreme Court.
Last week, President Joe Biden fulfilled a campaign promise when he announced that Jackson would be his nominee to replace Justice Stephen Breyer, who will retire at the end of the current term.
In a new essay written by Anita Hill for URL, the Duchess of Sussex reflected on the history-making ramifications of the nomination.
The Brandeis University professor explained that, in connecting with Meghan, she “thought of moments in modern history where Black women of stature and credential entered arenas once thought to be inaccessible.” Hill added of the duchess, “While her role over the past few years hasn’t been that of a federal judge or elected official, I couldn’t help but see a measure of parallelism given her experience navigating uncharted territory as a Black woman.”
Meanwhile, Meghan told Hill that Jackson’s nomination is another reminder that Black achievement is integral to the story of America.
“The civil rights history of tomorrow is being written today,” the duchess said. “Judge Jackson’s nomination has opened new ground for women’s representation at the highest level of a judicial system that for too long has tilted against the very community she hails from.
