Mr Bower is well-known for his take-down style biographies, where he spends months investigating his subjects before delivering a warts-and-all assessment. The journalist will now take aim at Meghan Markle, and is believed to have signed a six-figure sum to complete the “unauthorised” biography. A book critic has warned the Duchess could be in for a bumpy ride, as Mr Bower has already aired his contempt for the royal.
Jake Kerridge, a leading book critic, said the prospect of a Bower biography for any celebrity is a “terrifying” thought.
Writing in the Telegraph, he said: “For a public figure they must be the five most terrifying words in the language: ‘Tom Bower’s writing your biography’.
“So there’s likely to be wailing and gnashing of teeth in Montecito today with the news that Bower has signed a six-figure deal to write the unofficial life of the Duchess of Sussex.”
He said the biography is likely to be of stark contrast to the one published by Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand last year.
Mr Kerridge said: “If that treacly hagiography was a soothing ego-massage, Bower’s book will feel more like going 10 rounds with Tyson Fury.”
Previously, Mr Bower has written damning biographies of Robert Maxwell, Richard Branson, Simon Cowell, Jeremy Corbyn and Boris Johnson.
But the book critic notes that regardless of who he writes about, “few readers come away with the impression that they’ve been reading about a thoroughly decent sort”.
