Margaret Thatcher’s former aide Nile Gardiner has addressed a meeting of the Heritage Foundation from the United States to accuse left-wing supporters in the US and UK of seeking to “cancel” the monarchy. The Crown has come under renewed attack from anti-monarchists amid growing fallout from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s damaging claims in their bombshell interview. Mr Gardiner spoke of a “political campaign” against the British Royal Family.
Mr Gardiner told the virtual meeting of the American Conservative think tank: “I think what you are seeing is a sort of left-wing campaign to try and cancel the Monarchy.
“After all the Monarchy represents all the conservative values that we hold so dear to our hearts.
“The monarchy represents western civilisation, tradition and heritage.
“It represents something that the American left and no doubt the British left as well really despise and so what we are seeing is a very political campaign here and now against the British monarchy.

“One only has to go onto Twitter to see the kind of horrible vitriol that is being directed at the British Monarchy today.”
He also spoke of a “fair amount” of anti-British sentiment “under the surface” on the left and especially the far-left in the United States.
