It’s been quite a whirlwind since Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey aired over the weekend, laying bare all the damning racism, colorism, and outright enmity that pushed the couple out of the United Kingdom.
The depth of the depravity that helped drive the Duchess of Sussex to suicidal ideation, which she disclosed to a visibly emotionally struck Winfrey, was exemplified by the reaction to the interview’s revelation in the U.K. media. Piers Morgan, who has fixated on the duchess with increasingly disturbing venom since the news of her relationship with Harry became public in 2016, suggested on Good Morning Britain that she was lying about her suicidal thoughts and said that he finds her “contemptible” for whipping up an onslaught against the British royal family. On Tuesday, after months of haranguing Meghan online, in Daily Mail articles, and on his morning show, an outraged Morgan stormed off the set of the ITV program after a Black colleague quite soberly defended Meghan. Hours later, the producers of the show announced that Morgan would no longer be hosting it.
