Karl von Habsburg, Archduke of Austria and the head of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine, lashed out at Meghan and Harry in the wake of their much-discussed interview with Oprah. Austria’s Archduke said: “The two are so far behind in the line of succession, if not to say practically non-existent, that they play no role at all in this regard.
“And for that reason alone, such a globally broadcast appearance seems completely inappropriate to me.
“If there are actually problems or dissonances in the private sphere, then it would be more appropriate to discuss and clarify such things specifically in a private setting.
“For me, this media-staged appearance is a non-issue. It is only internal gossip and garbage.”
The Archduke is the son of Archduke Otto von Habsburg, the last Crown Prince of Austria, and Princess Regina of Saxe-Meiningen.
He is also the grandson of the last Austro-Hungarian emperor, Charles I, who succeeded Franz Joseph to the imperial throne following his death in 1916 and was formally dethroned in 1919 by the Austrian Parliament.
The Archduke is a politician, who has focused much of his career on protecting cultural heritage from threats such as armed conflict and natural disasters.
Since 1986, he has been president of the Austrian branch of the Paneuropean Union and was an MEP for the Austrian People’s Party between 1996 and 1999.
The Archduke’s comment comes only a few days after Meghan and Prince Harry sat down for an extraordinary interview with Oprah.
