Though the Queen has reportedly encouraged royal staff not to discuss the situation with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in the press, Prince William took matters into his own hands on Thursday. While out with his wife Kate Middleton for the first time after the interview, the Duke of Cambridge told a Sky News reporter, “We are very much not a racist family.” When asked if he had spoken to Harry following the Oprah interview, the royal replied, “No, I haven’t spoken to him yet, but I will do.”
That promise of a phone call comes after Harry confirmed to Oprah the rumors of a year-long rift between the once-close brothers. When asked about his relationship with William, the Duke of Sussex said that the word that currently defines it is “space.” But he added that “time heals all things, hopefully…I love William to bits. We’ve been through hell together and we have a shared experience, but we are on different paths.” According to ITV, there has been “some movement in the brothers’ communications” since the special aired. The outlet added that “they may have messaged one another to arrange, as William promised today, some kind of conversation.”
