With Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s highly anticipated interview with Oprah Winfrey set to air in less than a week, it’s high time to revisit the Duke and Duchess of Sussexes’ history with the media mogul, which dates back at least three years.
Below, a timeline of the Sussexes’ friendship with Oprah.
She attended their 2018 royal wedding.
When Harry and Meghan tied the knot, Oprah was among the esteemed guests in attendance at the ceremony. “It was more than a wedding, I thought,” she later told ET of the royal wedding. “It was a cultural moment. And you could not be there or watching on television… and not feel that there was a shift that just happened in the middle of it.”
Oprah also made headlines for spending time with Doria Ragland, Meghan’s mom, not long after the wedding. After Ragland was photographed leaving the media mogul’s home with gifts, some speculated that Oprah was trying to buy her way into the Sussexes’ inner circle—but she was quick to shut down those rumors. “The story was that Meghan’s mom had come to my house and she left laden with gifts,” Winfrey said. “You know what the gifts were? First of all, she’s great at yoga, so I said, ‘Bring your yoga mat and your sneaks in case we just want to do yoga on the lawn.’ So one of the bags was a yoga mat and the other was lunch.”
